DEWEYVILLE SHUFFLE - DRILLS

CHAPTER FIVE

These are the drills we use that are related specifically to the Deweyville Shuffle Offense.

THE BASIC CUT DRILL

The Basic Cut Drill is the first drill that we use in teaching the Shuffle Offense. This drill stresses the first cutter's cut to the basket and the actions of the other players to fill their positions in the offense. The second cutter spot has been left out and replaced by a rebounder/filler to keep the drill moving. The rebounder (eliminated second cutter) fills the post position after the shot, the same as the second cutter would in the Shuffle Offense. The first cutter will become the rebounder/filler (or second cutter) the same as in the offense except that he does not go all the way to the corner. The other positions in this drill should perform exactly as they would in the offense.

Diagrams 26 and 27: The Basic Cut Drill

***#1 - FIRST CUTTER: Passes the ball to the point man and makes the cut to the basket for a layup or inside shot. Becomes the rebounder/filler (second cutter).
***#2 - POINT: Swings the ball to the feeder. After the cut by the first cutter, he should go through the motion of setting a screen for the post man. Becomes the next feeder.
***#3 - FEEDER: Receives the ball from the point and squares up to the basket. He then makes the scoring pass to the first cutter. Then fills in at the back of the line in the backcourt.
***#5 - POST: Sets the screen for the first cutter, waits for the screen from the point, then goes to the point spot.
***#4 - (SECOND CUTTER) REBOUNDER/FILLER: Rebounds then takes the post position to the opposite side of the floor than the last play. Passes the ball to the new first cutter to continue the drill.

As the drill progresses you can add defense. First on the first cutter, then on the first cutter and on the feeder.

THE SPLIT DRILL

Diagram 28

***#1 - FIRST CUTTER: Passes to the post, then sets a screen for the second cutter. After the shot he rebounds and becomes the filler.
***#5 - POST: Receives the ball from the first cutter , then pass to the second cutter. After the shot, he rebounds and fills to the back of the second cutter line.
***#4 - SECOND CUTTER: As the first cutter passes to the post, he makes a move to the basket, then comes off the screen by the first cutter to receive a pass from the post for the jump shot. After the shot, he moves to the first cutter line.
***#F - FILLER: This player has a ball and after the shot, becomes the new post man on the same side of the court. He passes the ball to the new first cutter who starts the drill again.
NOTE: Whoever rebounds the ball should pass it to the previous first cutter because he is the new filler. And run the drill on both sides of the court.

TO FILL POSITIONS:
#1 to F
#5 to Second Cutter Line
#4 to First Cutter Line
F to #5 (Post spot)

THE FEEDER DRILL

Diagrams 29 and 30

***#1 - FIRST CUTTER: Passes to the point. Makes his normal cut, timing it to give the feeder the chance to shoot and positions himself for the rebound. Becomes the filler.
***#2 - POINT: Swings the ball to the filler and moves to the back of the first cutter line.
***#5 - POST: Sets the screen for the first cutter, rebounds, then becomes the new feeder.
***#3 - FEEDER: V-cuts hard to catch the ball from the point (free throw line extended and outside the three point line) and shoots the jump shot. Moves to the back of the point line.
***#6 FILLER: Has a ball and becomes the new post man after the shot. Passes to the first cutter to start the drill again.
NOTE: Run the drill to both sides of the court.

THE SECOND CUTTER DRILL

Diagrams 31 and 32

***#3 - FEEDER: Starts with the ball. Passes to the second cutter on his cut across the lane. After the second cutter shoots, he rebounds and then becomes the filler.
***#5 - POST: Sets a screen for the second cutter and then rebounds. Moves to the back of the second cutter line.
***#4 - SECOND CUTTER: Cuts around the post's screen across the lane. Receives the pass from the feeder and shoots the jump shot. After he shoots he moves to the back of the feeder line.
***#F - FILLER: Replaces the post, same side.
NOTE: (1)Whoever rebounds the ball makes a quick outlet pass to the new feeder and the drill begins again. (2) Run the drill to both sides of the court. (3) Add the drop step power dribble to the block for the bank shot. Diagram 32)(4) Add defense to any positions, especially the second cutter position.

THE POST DRILL

Diagrams 33 and 34

***#2 - POINT: Starts the drill by passing to the feeder. Then sets a screen for the post. After the shot, rebounds. Moves to the back of the feeder line.
***#3 - FEEDER: Receives the pass from the point, and passes to the post for the shot. Rebounds and then moves to the back of the post line.
***#5 - POST: Sets a screen for the first and second cutters (not actually in the drill) and waits for the screen from the point. Cuts off the screen by the point to his shooting position. Receives the pass from the feeder and shoots. Then moves to the back of the point line.

CORNER OPTION DRILL

Diagrams 35 and 36

***#1 - FIRST CUTTER: Passes to the second cutter, then rubs off the post's screen looking for the return pass. Moves to the post spot.
***#4 - POST: After the pass from the first cutter to the second cutter, he steps out to screen for the first cutter. After the first cutter cuts off his screen he pops out to the first cutter position looking for a pass for the shot.
***#5 - POINT: After the first cutter cuts off the post's screen, he makes a cut to the ballside low post spot looking for a pass for the shot. Moves to the second cutter spot.
***#2 - SECOND CUTTER: V-cuts and receives the pass from the first cutter. Then makes the scoring pass. Moves to the back of the point line.

NOTE:
First - the second cutter passes to the cutting first cutter for the shot.
Second - the second cutter passes to the post who steps out to the first cutter spot.
Third - the second cutter passes to the point cutting down the lane to the low post spot.
Fourth - the second cutter randomly passes to any of the three players (first cutter, post, point).
